Discover more about Sigmund Thun Klamm Wasserfall

The Sigmund Thun Gorge (Sigmund Thun Klamm) is a stunning natural monument located near Kaprun, in the Salzburg region of Austria. Over thousands of years, the Kapruner Ache river has carved a 320-meter-long and up to 30-meter-deep gorge through the rock. The result is a mesmerizing display of natural power, featuring unique rock formations, mighty cliffs, and thundering waterfalls. Named after Sigmund Earl of Thun, who was impressed by the gorge in the late 19th century, the Klamm was opened to the public in 1893. The construction of a nearby hydroelectric power plant led to its closure in 1938, but it was lovingly restored and reopened in the early 1990s. Today, well-maintained wooden walkways and bridges allow visitors of all ages to safely explore the gorge and witness the raw beauty of nature up close. As you walk through the gorge, the roaring water and the interplay of light and shadow create a unique atmosphere. Information boards provide insights into the history of the gorge and the surrounding nature. The path leads to the Klammsee reservoir, where a picturesque circular trail offers additional photo opportunities. During the summer months, special events like night visits with mystical lighting enhance the experience.
