Alternatively, take the Krimmler Wasserfälle bus from the train station to the entrance. Bus and train fares vary depending on the distance traveled.

Discover more about Krimml Waterfalls

The Krimml Waterfalls (Krimmler Wasserfälle) are a breathtaking natural wonder located near the village of Krimml, in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria. These majestic falls, the highest in Austria and among the highest in Europe, boast a total drop of 380 meters (1,250 feet) as they cascade down three distinct stages. Formed by the Krimmler Ache river, a glacial stream fed by the melting glaciers of the surrounding mountains, the waterfalls have attracted visitors since the late 18th century when Romantic artists discovered the area. By the 19th century, Krimml had become a sought-after destination for those seeking inspiration in nature's sublime beauty. The falls' three stages—the upper Achenfall (140 meters), the middle Achenfall (100 meters), and the lower Achenfall (140 meters)—each offer a unique perspective on the raw power and stunning beauty of the water. A well-maintained, 4-kilometer hiking trail winds alongside the falls, providing numerous viewpoints and platforms to experience the spectacle up close. The trail, constructed in 1900, is easily accessible and offers viewing platforms with spectacular views. The hike to the top waterfall takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. The falls are open from mid-April to late October, with the best time to visit in late spring and early summer when the snowmelt is at its peak, creating the most dramatic water displays. The Krimml Waterfalls are not only a visual spectacle but also have a therapeutic microclimate. The mist generated by the falls creates an abundance of negative air ions, which have been shown to improve respiratory and lung function.
