Discover more about Krimml Waterfalls

The Krimml Waterfalls (Krimmler Wasserfälle) are a breathtaking natural spectacle located near the village of Krimml, within the Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria. Renowned as Austria's highest waterfalls, they cascade down a total height of 380 meters (1,247 feet) in three distinct stages. This impressive natural monument attracts around 400,000 visitors annually, drawn by the sheer power and beauty of the cascading water. The falls are formed by the Krimmler Ache river, a glacial stream fed by the melting glaciers of the surrounding mountains. The water volume varies throughout the year, with the most dramatic displays occurring in late spring and early summer due to snowmelt. The three stages of the falls include the upper Achenfall (140 meters), the middle Achenfall (100 meters), and the lower Achenfall (140 meters), each offering a unique perspective. The history of tourism at Krimml Waterfalls dates back to the late 18th century when Romantic artists discovered the area's inspiring natural environment. By the 19th century, Krimml had become a popular destination for those seeking the sublime in nature. In 1842, the first stairway to the lower falls was built. To ensure tourists could see the waterfall without difficulty, Ignaz von Kürsinger created a path to the upper part of the waterfall. In 1879, the Austrian Alpine Club improved the road to provide a more panoramic view. Today, a well-maintained 4 km hiking trail winds alongside the cascading water, offering numerous viewpoints and platforms to experience the spectacle up close. The trail, constructed in 1900, is well-paved and maintained. The hike to the top of the falls takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. The spray from the falls creates ideal growth conditions for mosses, lichens, and ferns, and the surrounding area is home to 62 bird species. The falls are open from mid-April to the end of October. The Krimml Waterfalls are not only a spectacular attraction but also a place of healing. The fine water mist created by the falling water masses contains negative ions, which have an anti-inflammatory effect and can strengthen the respiratory tract.
