Discover more about Schloss Tratzberg

Schloss Tratzberg, perched on a dramatic ridge between Jenbach and Stans, offers a captivating journey through time. Originally mentioned in the 13th century, the castle served as a strategic border fortress against Bavaria. It later became a favored hunting lodge for Emperor Maximilian I. After a devastating fire in 1492, Maximilian I traded the ruins to the Tänzl brothers, who rebuilt it in grand late-Gothic style around 1500. Over the centuries, Tratzberg passed through many hands, including the Ilsung and Fugger families, each leaving their mark on its architecture and interiors. The castle fell into disrepair and remained uninhabited for 150 years. In 1847, the Enzenberg family acquired the castle and began extensive restorations, ultimately making it their private residence. Today, Count Ulrich Goëss-Enzenberg and his wife Katrin Goëss-Enzenberg reside in the castle, continuing its preservation and opening its doors to the public. Visitors can explore the castle's magnificent Renaissance courtyard, the Habsburg Hall with its impressive family tree featuring 148 portraits, the Queen's Chamber with a secret door, and the armory. Guided audio tours in multiple languages bring the castle's history to life, while children can enjoy special fairytale tours. For a unique experience, take the Tratzberg Express, a charming little train, from the parking area to the castle through a fairytale forest.
