    Discover more about Wolfsklamm

The Wolfsklamm, or Wolf Gorge, is a captivating natural attraction nestled in the Karwendel Mountains near Stans, Tyrol, Austria. Often lauded as the "most beautiful gorge in Tyrol," this dramatic landscape has been sculpted over millions of years by the relentless force of the Stallenbach, Gamsbach and Georgenbergerbach mountain rivers, carving deep into the limestone rock. The gorge's name evokes a sense of mystery and wildness, possibly originating from a time when wolves, lynx, and bears roamed the surrounding forests, seeking refuge in its rugged terrain. While those predators are now gone, the spirit of untamed nature persists within the Wolfsklamm's narrow confines. The history of tourism in the Wolfsklamm dates back to the late 19th century when the opening of the first Kneipp health spa in Stans sparked interest in the gorge's therapeutic benefits. In 1901, the first footpath was constructed, allowing visitors to venture into this natural wonderland. However, the gorge's volatile nature presented numerous challenges. Floods, avalanches, and rockfalls repeatedly destroyed the paths, requiring constant reconstruction and rerouting. The current trail, which has been open since 1957 after major reconstruction, is a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. It winds its way through the gorge, ascending over 350 steps and wooden walkways that cling to the steep rock walls. As you hike deeper into the Wolfsklamm, you'll be enveloped by a symphony of natural sounds – the roar of cascading waterfalls, the rush of emerald-green water, and the gentle rustling of leaves in the lush vegetation. The trail leads you past numerous waterfalls, each with its unique character and charm. The cool, humid air creates a microclimate that supports a diverse array of plant life, including rare orchids and Turk's cap lilies. The path, squeezed between narrow rock walls, leads over the emerald-green waters of the Stanserbach River. Thanks to the cool and humid weather, a jungle-like experience awaits you in the gorge as various plants, ferns, and shrubs overgrow the rocks and the roadside. Beyond its natural beauty, the Wolfsklamm also offers a glimpse into Tyrolean history and culture. At the end of the gorge, a challenging but rewarding climb leads to the Benedictine monastery of St. Georgenberg, the oldest pilgrimage site in Tyrol. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, the monastery offers stunning views of the surrounding forests and mountains. The High Bridge (Hohe Brücke), considered to be Tirol's oldest wooden bridge dating back to 1497, is located near the monastery. The Wolfsklamm is more than just a scenic hike; it's an immersive experience that engages all your senses. The spray from the waterfalls cools your skin, the scent of damp earth fills your nostrils, and the sight of sunlight filtering through the dense canopy creates a magical atmosphere. It's a place where you can reconnect with nature, challenge yourself physically, and discover the rich history and culture of the Tyrolean Alps. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a family looking for an exciting day trip, the Wolfsklamm offers something for everyone. Just be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes, as the paths can be steep and slippery, and allow plenty of time to soak in the beauty of this natural wonder. The Wolfsklamm is open from May 1st to October 31st, between 9 am and 4 pm. The gorge may close in bad weather. The Wolfsklamm is easily accessible from Stans, and is located between Jenbach and Schwaz. It's a 17-minute drive away from Hall in Tirol and a 30-minute drive away from Innsbruck. Stans is accessible via the A12 motorway coming from Germany / Kufstein, as well as from Innsbruck, just take the exit for Schwaz. Or the motorway exit for Jenbach (only possible coming from the Innsbruck direction). After your hike, take some time to explore the charming village of Stans, which was home to the first Kneipp health spa in Austria. Stans is actually one of the birthplaces of the 'wellness' concept in Austria. Wander through its quaint streets, admire the traditional Tyrolean architecture, and savor the local cuisine at one of the village's cozy restaurants. The village of Stans is also home to the Laurentius Church. The Wolfsklamm is a destination that will leave you with lasting memories of Austria's natural beauty and cultural heritage. It's a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and reconnect with the power and tranquility of the natural world. The narrow, forest trail drops down to the small Maria Tax chapel (10 minutes) and then continues to descend to Stans (20-25 minutes). The final leg is steep and more rugged than expected. The path is secured with a cable railing. Views of the village open up as you near the valley floor. The path spits you out at the top of the village. Follow the main road to your car park, or to the train station.
