Ağa Mikayil Hamamı, an 18th-century architectural gem, offers a glimpse into Baku's rich cultural heritage. Constructed by Haji Agha Mikayil from Shamakhi, this historic bathhouse is located in the southeastern part of Icherisheher, Baku's Old City, on Kichik Qala street. The area where the bathhouse is located is known among the locals as “bath keepers’ community”. This bathhouse is also known as Mashadi Ibad Hamamı, named after the main character from the movie “O olmasın, bu olsun”. The hamam distinguishes itself with its spacious interior, setting it apart from other bathhouses. The cloakroom and bath-rooms are square-shaped. Four central pillars support the structure, creating a grand composition. The architectural design showcases pointed arches, cupolas, and domes divided by proportional tiers. The domes, rising above the stone facade, reflect vernacular architectural traditions. A uniquely shaped chimneystack stands prominently above the building, blending seamlessly into the town's civil system. Historically, hamams in Baku were more than just places for hygiene; they were social institutions. People gathered to share news, discuss important events, and even seek solutions to community problems. The older generation, who were not active internet users, relied on these gatherings to stay informed and connected. It was a place where conflicts were set aside, and community bonds were strengthened. Inside Ağa Mikayil Hamamı, visitors can experience a traditional bathing ritual. This includes steam rooms, saunas, and massage services. After these treatments, guests can relax in the tearoom, enjoying tea with sugar cubes or homemade jam. Female visitors can also engage fortune tellers who use coffee grinds or tarot cards to predict their future, a practice traditionally exclusive to women. The hamam is open to women on Mondays and Fridays, and to men the rest of the week. It features three shower cabins, private bath rooms, a jacuzzi, and both dry and wet saunas. Massage services are also available. Various herbs and teas are served to help customers combat fatigue. In 2011, the hamam underwent restoration as part of the “Detailed and Comprehensive Restoration Plan of the Historical Center of Baku” by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Local and foreign experts participated in the restoration, ensuring the preservation of its historical and architectural integrity.
