Overview

Saadet Sarayi, or the Palace of Happiness, is one of Baku's most enchanting landmarks, steeped in a tale of love and architectural grandeur. Constructed in the early 1900s by Murtuza Mukhtarov, a wealthy oil magnate, as a gift for his wife, Liza Tuganova, the palace embodies a fusion of Neo-Gothic design with local Azerbaijani influences.Inspired by a French Gothic building that Liza admired during their travels, Mukhtarov commissioned Polish architect Józef Płoszko to create a replica in Baku. Completed in 1912, the palace boasts intricate stone carvings, elegant turrets, and a dramatic facade, making it an architectural masterpiece. Legend says that Mukhtarov surprised his wife by bringing her to the completed palace, declaring it her new residence.Beyond its romantic origins, Saadet Sarayi has served various purposes throughout its history. In the Soviet era, it housed the Ali Bayramov Club, a women's organization providing vocational skills and cultural activities. Today, the Palace of Happiness operates as a cultural center, hosting exhibitions, conferences, and, most famously, wedding ceremonies. Its halls, adorned in classic Rococo style, provide a stunning backdrop for celebrations. The palace stands as a symbol of Baku's rich cultural heritage, blending Eastern and Western influences, and a lasting tribute to enduring love.
