Discover more about Chokak Hamam

Chokak Hamam, meaning 'fallen bath' in Azerbaijani, is a significant historical landmark located near the Juma Mosque in Ganja. Constructed in 1606 by order of the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas I, the bathhouse was designed by architect Sheikh Bahaeddin. The name 'Chokak' refers to its sunken construction, a design choice made to ensure adequate water pressure. The bathhouse was built using traditional materials such as red bricks, egg whites, clay, and lime-based binding mixture. Its architecture features one large dome and two smaller ones. Steam was distributed through ceramic pipes in the walls and floors, providing even heating. This system was used until 1963. Over the years, the Chokak Hamam has been known by various names, including 'Shah Abbas Hamam' and 'Mosque Bathhouse'. After Azerbaijan regained its independence, the bathhouse became home to a Decorative Applied Arts Center. The monument was restored in 2003. Today, the Chokak Hamam operates as a bath for one of the hotels in Ganja and serves as a cultural center.
