Javad Khan Mausoleum: A Tribute to Ganja's Last Ruler

The Javad Khan Mausoleum, located in Shah Abbas Square in Ganja, stands as a poignant reminder of the city's rich history and the courageous leadership of Javad Khan. Javad Khan, the last khan of the Ganja Khanate, is remembered for his valiant defense of Ganja against invading Russian forces in 1804. He was killed in battle on January 3, 1804.The mausoleum was erected in 2005 with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Constructed with fired red bricks in the Arran architectural style, the quadrangular mausoleum features an arched entrance and windows decorated with colorful netting. Inside, the grave of Javad Khan serves as a place for quiet contemplation and respect.Initially, Javad Khan and his son were buried with honors in the Khan's Cemetery within the Juma Mosque grounds. However, during the Soviet era, the cemetery was obscured, and the khan's grave was lost. In 1962, his tombstone and remains were accidentally discovered during the construction of a fountain. His remains were reburied and finally returned to their original resting place in 1990. Today, the original tombstone is a prized exhibit at the Ganja History and Regional Studies Museum.Visiting the Javad Khan Mausoleum provides a deeper understanding of Ganja's past and the sacrifices made to protect its independence.
