Afurja Waterfall Travel Guide

Afurja Waterfall, one of Azerbaijan's tallest waterfalls, is situated near Afurja village in the Quba region. The waterfall is part of the Velvelichay River, cascading down the slopes of Mount Tengi from about 75 meters. The name “Afurja” translates to “water splashes,” a fitting description as the strong winds cause the waterfall's streams to sway, scattering cool droplets in all directions.For many years, Afurja Waterfall was a local secret, but its popularity grew in the early 2000s when the Azerbaijani government began promoting regional tourism. Today, it's a part of ecotourism and adventure tourism circuits. Visitors are drawn to the peaceful atmosphere and the soothing sound of the cascading water. The surrounding area is lush with greenery, especially during the warmer months, offering a perfect backdrop for hikes and picnics.The journey to Afurja Waterfall includes a scenic drive through mountainous terrain and a short hike. The best time to visit is during late spring and early summer (May-June) when the weather is pleasant, and the water flow is at its peak. The waterfall is recognized as a geological natural monument of Azerbaijan and is protected by the state. Nearby, about 10 kilometers from the waterfall, are over forty springs that burst forth from the ground.
