Discover more about Agh Gol National Park

Agh Gol National Park, meaning 'White Lake' in Azerbaijani, is a protected area established in 2003, encompassing 17,924 hectares in the Agjabedi and Beylagan districts of Azerbaijan. The park was created to preserve the migrating routes, wintering and nesting areas of waterfowl and water birds, as well as to support the breeding of commercial fish species. The park is centered around Lake Agh Gol, the second-largest lake in Azerbaijan, formed by the flooding of the Kura and Araz rivers. The lake's waters are slightly saline, creating a unique ecosystem that supports a rich variety of life. The surrounding landscape is a blend of semi-desert and wetland habitats, with steppe grasslands meeting the lake's edge. Agh Gol National Park is renowned for its exceptional birdlife, with over 140 species recorded, including 89 nesting species. It serves as a vital stopover and breeding ground for migratory birds, especially during the spring and autumn migration seasons. Birdwatchers can observe a wide array of species, such as swans, geese, ducks, pelicans, egrets, and waders. The park is particularly important for endangered species like the white-tailed eagle, white pelican, and marbled teal. Beyond birds, the park is also home to mammals like wild boars, coypus, jungle cats, gazelles, wolves, reed cats, and foxes. Reptiles, including Caspian and swamp turtles, as well as common and water grass snakes, also inhabit the area. Visitors can explore the park on foot, following trails that wind through the steppe and along the lake. The park also has a visitor center that provides information about the fauna and flora of the area and organizes educational tours and activities.
