Chirag Gala, or 'Lamp Castle,' is an ancient fortress in Azerbaijan, a sentinel overlooking the Caspian coastal plains. Located north of Baku in the Guba region, this historical landmark dates back to the 4th-5th centuries AD. The Sassanid Persians constructed it as part of the Gilgilchay defensive system, which also included fortresses in Baku and Derbent.Strategically positioned atop a mountain at an altitude of 1,230 meters, Chirag Gala functioned as a crucial lookout post. Its name derives from its role in the Caspian watch-observation network; inhabitants would light torches to warn allies of approaching enemy incursions. The fortress has an irregular rectangular shape and features 17 towers, providing extensive views of the surrounding landscape.Though the fortress ceased its defensive functions in the 18th century, it remains a popular destination for tourists. Visitors can explore the ruins, hike the rocky terrain, and enjoy panoramic views of the Caspian coastline.

Driving
From Baku, head north on the M1 highway. Continue for approximately 127 km. Exit towards Shabran and follow signs for Chirag Gala. Be aware that the final approach involves navigating rocky terrain, making it nearly impossible to reach the fortress directly by vehicle. Parking is available near the base of the mountain, from which you'll need to hike.
Public Transport
Take a bus from Baku International Bus Terminal to Shabran. Buses depart approximately every 3 hours and cost around 9-13 AZN. From Shabran, hire a taxi to the base of Chirag Gala mountain. A taxi ride should cost approximately 10-15 AZN. From there, it's a 6 km hike to the fortress.
Walking
From the village of Dashli Yanar, near Siyazan, a 6 km hiking trail leads to Chirag Gala. The hike takes approximately 2-3 hours, depending on fitness level, through rocky trails. Ensure you have appropriate footwear and are prepared for a moderately challenging trek.
