Discover more about Javanshir Tower

Javanshir Tower, or Javanshir Fortress, is located 4 km north of Talistan village in the Ismayilli region, perched on the right bank of the Agchay River. This historical monument provides a glimpse into the region's rich past, dating back over 2000 years, and its strategic importance in the early medieval period. The fortress is named after Javanshir, a ruler from the Mehranid dynasty of Caucasian Albania, who reigned from 637 to 680 AD. He was known for his political and military leadership, and the fortress served as an administrative and defensive center during his rule, protecting the region from invaders. The tower's construction is attributed to the 7th to 12th centuries, showcasing the architectural styles and defensive strategies of that time. The fortress complex includes outer and inner sections, with the inner fortress (Ichgala) situated at the highest point of the mountain. The outer walls, up to 2 meters wide and 10 meters high, provided a formidable defense. Archaeological excavations suggest that Talistan is one of the oldest settlements in the Ismayilli region. Visitors can explore the ruins, imagine life within its walls, and appreciate the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The surrounding area offers natural beauty, with dense forests and waterfalls. Local legends add to the mystique; one tale speaks of a secret underground tunnel connecting the fortress to the Maiden Tower, located several kilometers away. While the tunnel has collapsed, remnants are said to remain.
