Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Ismayilli city center, take a local bus or marshrutka heading towards Qalacıq or surrounding villages along the Qaraməryəm-İsmayıllı-Şəki road. Inform the driver you wish to get off at Ismailli State Reserve. The bus fare is approximately 0.50-1 AZN. From the drop-off point on the main road, it's a short walk (approximately 1-2 kilometers) to the reserve entrance; follow the signs.

  • Taxi/Ride-Share

    From Ismayilli city center, a taxi or ride-share to Ismailli State Reserve is readily available. The journey takes around 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. Negotiate the fare beforehand, expect to pay approximately 5-10 AZN. The driver will drop you off at the reserve entrance.

  • Driving

    From Ismayilli city center, head north on the Qaraməryəm-İsmayıllı-Şəki road (R-9). Continue on this road for approximately 10-15 kilometers. Look for signs indicating Ismailli State Reserve. There is a designated parking area near the reserve entrance. Parking is free.

Ismailli State Reserve, established in 1981, spans 167 square kilometers of Azerbaijan's Ismailli and Gabala regions. The reserve was created to preserve and protect the unique natural complexes of the area, encompassing the northern part of the southern slope of the Major Caucasus Mountains.The landscape is a tapestry of diverse ecosystems, from dense forests of beech, hornbeam and oak at lower altitudes, to birch and other deciduous trees higher up. The undergrowth is equally varied, with shrubs, ferns, and wildflowers adding vibrant colors to the scenery. Keep an eye out for the chestnut-leaved oak and horehound oak, both listed in the Red Book of Azerbaijan.Wildlife abounds within the reserve, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and photographers. Over 170 animal species call Ismailli State Reserve home, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Lucky visitors may catch a glimpse of brown bears, lynx, wild cats, Caucasian deer, roe deer, chamois, and Caucasian goats roaming freely. The reserve is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 104 bird species identified, including eagles, falcons, and various migratory birds.Beyond its natural beauty, Ismailli State Reserve also holds cultural significance. Nearby villages offer a glimpse into traditional Azerbaijani life, with opportunities to experience local customs, cuisine, and hospitality.
