Ismailli State Reserve: A Biodiversity Hotspot

Ismailli State Reserve, established in 1981, spans 167 square kilometers of Azerbaijan's Ismailli and Gabala regions. The reserve was created to preserve and protect the unique natural complexes of the area, encompassing the northern part of the southern slope of the Major Caucasus Mountains.The landscape is a tapestry of diverse ecosystems, from dense forests of beech, hornbeam and oak at lower altitudes, to birch and other deciduous trees higher up. The undergrowth is equally varied, with shrubs, ferns, and wildflowers adding vibrant colors to the scenery. Keep an eye out for the chestnut-leaved oak and horehound oak, both listed in the Red Book of Azerbaijan.Wildlife abounds within the reserve, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and photographers. Over 170 animal species call Ismailli State Reserve home, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Lucky visitors may catch a glimpse of brown bears, lynx, wild cats, Caucasian deer, roe deer, chamois, and Caucasian goats roaming freely. The reserve is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 104 bird species identified, including eagles, falcons, and various migratory birds.Beyond its natural beauty, Ismailli State Reserve also holds cultural significance.
