Constructed in the 18th century from distinctive red brick, the bathhouse showcases Eastern architectural design, complete with a dome that once regulated the interior climate.For generations, Chukhur Hammam served as a vital gathering place for the people of Quba, offering a space to cleanse, socialize, and unwind. Until 1985, it functioned as a traditional bathhouse, playing an integral role in the community's social fabric. Locals exchanged stories, shared meals, and forged lasting bonds within its walls. The hammam's design, featuring six rooms each with a specific purpose, facilitated both physical and spiritual rejuvenation. Light streamed through six windows, creating a serene atmosphere.The hammam is also known as the 'Red Bathhouse' because of its construction from red bricks. The use of heat-resistant red bricks ensured warmth throughout the structure. Water was sourced from a well beneath the building or from the city's supply.Chukhur Hammam's history extends beyond its communal role. In 1858, the renowned French writer Alexandre Dumas visited the bathhouse during his travels in Azerbaijan. Remarkably, 150 years later, his great-grandson also visited, bridging the past and present.However, Chukhur Hammam also carries a tragic history. In 1918, during a period of conflict, the bathhouse was the site of a mass killing. Armenian militants reportedly suffocated local civilians by trapping them inside and filling the building with steam.Today, Chukhur Hammam has been meticulously restored and transformed into a museum, preserving Quba's cultural heritage. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the hammam's history, its role in Azerbaijani culture, and the events of 1918. It stands as a poignant reminder of the past and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
