Fountains Square, known locally as “Fəvvarələr Meydanı” and historically as “Parapet,” is the cultural, social, and commercial center of Baku. Dating back to 1868, it initially served as a military parade ground. The square transformed over time, especially after the Shollar Water Pipeline's completion in 1916, which brought clean water and greenery to the area.In the 1950s, architect I. Tikhomirov redesigned the square, merging it with Nizami Square and adding landscaping. A major upgrade in 1984 introduced the decorative fountains that give the plaza its modern name. The most significant transformation occurred in 2010, with renovations that added elegant paving, restored historic facades, and introduced bronze sculptures like “Girl on a Bench” and “Girl with an Umbrella”. Red curved lanterns were also installed, creating a distinctive glow at night.Today, Fountains Square is surrounded by boutiques, shops, restaurants, and hotels. It hosts live concerts, festivals, and public celebrations throughout the year. Nearby attractions include Icherisheher (Old City), Baku Boulevard, and the Nizami Museum of Literature.
