Discover more about Yezidabad Castle

Yezidabad Castle, or Nakhchivangala, is a reconstructed fortress that stands as a testament to Nakhchivan's rich and turbulent history. Believed to have been commissioned in the 7th century AD by Yazdgerd III, the last king of the Sasanian Empire, the castle was a strategic defensive stronghold during a time of intense geopolitical struggle. Over the centuries, Yezidabad Castle witnessed numerous shifts in power, destruction, and restoration. In 705 AD, Arab conquerors destroyed the nearby Armenian settlement of Astapat and established Yezidabad as the region's center, gradually leading to the fortress being known as Nakhchivan. From the 11th century, it served as a residence for the Atabeks, governors appointed by the Seljuk Turks, during which Nakhchivan flourished as a cultural and political hub. Continuous wars and neglect led to the castle's disrepair, with little remaining by the end of the 20th century. Recognizing its historical significance, local authorities undertook an ambitious reconstruction project from 2010 to 2014. Today, visitors can explore the reconstructed walls, visit the museum within the castle grounds, and enjoy panoramic views of Nakhchivan. Inside the castle, a museum displays artifacts unearthed from the site, some dating back to the Bronze Age. Walking along the castle walls provides stunning views of the city and the surrounding landscape.
