Agh Gol National Park, established in 2003, is a protected area encompassing 17,924 hectares in the Agjabedi and Beylagan districts of Azerbaijan. The park was created to safeguard the ecological systems surrounding Lake Agh Gol, also known as White Lake, a significant wetland in the Kur-Araz Lowlands. This national park is not only a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna but also a crucial stopover for migratory birds, making it a paradise for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts.The park's landscape is characterized by a unique blend of semi-desert terrain and wetland habitats. The Mill steppe, a slightly hilly plain, surrounds the lake, creating a picturesque setting. The climate is arid, with warm, dry summers and cool winters. This combination of factors contributes to the park's rich biodiversity, supporting a wide array of plant and animal life. In spring, the area bursts into color with wildflowers, while autumn brings a golden hue to the landscape.Lake Agh Gol itself is the heart of the national park. It is the second-largest lake in Azerbaijan, formed by the floods of the Kura and Araz rivers. The lake's water is slightly salty due to the inflow of mineral-rich waters from the Araz River. Agh Gol National Park is renowned for its birdlife. Over 140 species of birds have been recorded in the park, including 89 nesting species. The park is an Important Bird Area (IBA), recognized by BirdLife International, and a Ramsar wetland of international importance since 2001. During migration seasons, the park becomes a bustling hub for various bird species, including ducks, geese, swans, pelicans, and waders. Beyond birds, the park is also home to a variety of mammals, reptiles, and fish. Gazelles roam the steppe, while wolves, jackals, jungle cats, foxes, and wild boars can be found in the more secluded areas.
