Askeran Fortress: A Sentinel of Stone

Askeran Fortress, a historical landmark also called Mayraberd, is located in the town of Askeran. The fortress's current structure was built in the 18th century and consists of two sections. The left-bank section features a double line of stone walls. Historical accounts suggest that the site of Askeran Fortress has been strategically significant since the Middle Ages, with an earlier fortress and Armenian village known as Mayraberd existing in the same location. The current structure was largely constructed during the reign of Panah Ali Khan of the Karabakh Khanate, with further expansion and fortification taking place in the late 18th century. The fortress played a crucial role in defending the eastern frontier of the Melikdom of Varanda against incursions from neighboring powers. The architecture of Askeran Fortress is characterized by its robust stone walls, which stretch for over 1.5 kilometers along the Qarqar River valley. These walls, reaching heights of up to 9 meters and thicknesses of 2 meters, are constructed from cobblestone and lime mortar, showcasing the skilled craftsmanship of the period. The fortress is further reinforced by a series of towers, strategically positioned to provide commanding views of the surrounding terrain and facilitate communication between different sections of the defensive complex. Visitors to Askeran Fortress can explore the well-preserved ruins, walk along the ramparts, and imagine life within its walls centuries ago.
