Discover more about Noah's Mausoleum

Noah's Mausoleum, located in the city of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, is a site of profound historical and religious importance. Nakhchivan itself is steeped in legends, with many believing it to be the place where Noah settled after the Great Flood. Some historians and geographers even support this claim. The mausoleum is considered by some to be the burial site of Noah. The architecture of the original construction dates back to the 8th century. According to Armenian tradition, Noah himself founded Nakhchivan. The mausoleum was initially part of a medieval Armenian church complex, serving as a monastery and pilgrimage site in the 12th and 13th centuries. Historical sources from the 19th century note that local Armenians revered it as a holy place. The original Armenian structure was destroyed in 1953 during the Soviet era, and the current mausoleum was built in 2006. The tomb consists of the lower story remains of a former temple. A stone staircase leads to a burial vault, where a stone column stands, believed to mark Noah's final resting place. A painting by Bahruz Kangarli, displayed at the National Art Museum of Azerbaijan, depicts the mausoleum as it appeared a century ago. The mausoleum is located between the Historical and Architectural Museum Complex of "Nakhchivangala" and the Heydar Mosque. Scientific research in 2006 identified the probable location of Noah's grave, leading to restoration work that aimed to recreate the structure's original appearance, which was octagonal with an entrance on the western side.
