Discover more about Khinaliq

Khinaliq, also known as Khinalug or Xinalig, is a remote village in the Quba region of Azerbaijan, high in the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Situated at an altitude of approximately 2,350 meters (7,710 feet), it's one of the highest continuously inhabited villages in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus. Khinaliq's history dates back an incredible 5,000 years, with archaeological evidence from the Early Bronze Age. Ancient historians like Strabo and Pliny mentioned this village, underlining its long-standing significance. Locals believe they are descendants of Noah, with legends claiming his Ark rested on a nearby mountain. The village's architecture is unique, with stone houses built into the steep mountainsides in a terraced, amphitheater-like formation. The roof of one house often serves as the courtyard for the house above. These homes are constructed from local river stones bound with mud and straw, providing excellent insulation. Khinaliq is known for its distinct culture, most notably the Khinalug language, a linguistic isolate spoken only in this village and a nearby settlement. The village was designated as part of the Cultural Landscape of Khinalig People and “Köç Yolu” Transhumance Route UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. This recognizes the semi-nomadic tradition where families move between high mountain pastures in the summer and warmer lowlands in the winter. Visitors can explore the local museum, which showcases the village's history and culture. Hiking and nature walks are popular activities, with trails offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
