Nestled in Sheki, the Khan Mosque and Cemetery offer a serene escape into Azerbaijan's rich history. Constructed in the 18th century by the order of Muhammad Hussein Khan, the mosque, originally known as the First Friday Mosque, showcases exquisite Azerbaijani architecture. The mosque's design includes intricate tile work and vibrant colors, reflecting the artistry of the period.The mosque suffered damage from a fire in 1853 but was restored by local residents. The structure is made from river stones, burnt bricks, lime mortar, and wood from plane, pistachio, and walnut trees. The exterior features a gallery, and plane trees tower above the mosque, adding to its beauty.Adjacent to the mosque is the Khan Cemetery, the final resting place for Sheki khans and their family members. The tombstones are adorned with unique carvings. The complex also features a two-story museum displaying artifacts from the Sheki Khanate period. During the Soviet era, the mosque was closed and repurposed as a House of Intelligentsia. Restoration work was carried out, and in 2022, the mosque was reopened for worship and tourism.
