Chirag Gala, meaning 'Lamp Castle' in Azerbaijani, is a captivating historical site located north of Baku, Azerbaijan. This ruined fortress, built by the Sassanid Persians in the 5th century AD, stands as a testament to the region's rich history and strategic importance.Strategically positioned atop a mountain in the Guba Forest at an altitude of 1230 meters, Chirag Gala was an integral part of the Gilgilchay defensive system. This system, which also included the fortresses of Baku and Derbent, was designed to protect the area from invasions by northern tribes. The fortress served as a crucial lookout post, enabling its inhabitants to warn allies of approaching enemies by lighting torches – hence its name. The fires lit at Chirag Gala were visible from Derbent and Baku, ensuring control over the northern borders.The fortress itself has an irregular rectangular shape and features 17 towers, offering panoramic views of the Caspian coastal plains. Built with rough river stones, the defensive walls are approximately two meters thick, and the fortress is bordered by steep cliffs on its northeastern side. Chirag Gala remained in use as a defensive structure until the 18th century. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its historical significance and stunning natural surroundings. Climbing to the top of the mountain, though challenging, rewards visitors with unparalleled views of the Azerbaijani landscape.
