Discover more about Şirvan Milli Parkı - Shirvan National Park

Şirvan National Park, located in the southeastern Shirvan Plain of Azerbaijan, was established in 2003 to safeguard the region's unique ecosystem. The park spans over 54,373.5 hectares (543.735 km2) across the Salyan and Neftchala districts. It was founded on the base of the Shirvan State Reserve, which was originally created in 1969. The park's landscape is characterized by a semi-desert environment, featuring both plains and wetlands. Historically, the territory was once at the bottom of the Caspian Sea, resulting in an accumulative plain that lies 20–25 meters below sea level. The climate is moderately warm, with hot, dry summers and cool, dry winters. Şirvan National Park is renowned for its diverse flora and fauna. The desert vegetation includes Halocnemum, Halostachys, and Salicornia formations, which thrive on the park's solonchaks (saline soils). Halocnemum vegetation covers approximately 40% of the park. The park also plays a crucial role in the conservation of the goitered gazelle, a species that has been reintroduced to other areas in Azerbaijan and Georgia from Şirvan. The park is a significant stopover for migratory birds, with 230 recorded species, including rare birds of prey such as the white-tailed sea eagle and imperial eagle. The park's lakes and reservoirs are inhabited by waterfowl like geese and golden geese. Other animals found in the park include wolves, jackals, wild boars, and the reed cat. Reptiles such as the Mediterranean and Caspian turtles also inhabit the area. Şirvan National Park offers a unique opportunity to witness Azerbaijan's natural beauty and observe its diverse wildlife. It serves as a vital sanctuary for endangered species and a center for ecological research and education.
