Mərdəkan Fortress, a captivating historical site in Azerbaijan, is composed of two main fortresses: the Quadrangular Castle and the Round Castle. The Quadrangular Castle, or Great Mərdəkan Castle, was erected in the 12th century by Shirvanshah Akhsitan I. Rising 22 meters high, its walls, divided into five tiers, provided strategic views of the coastline. Inside, spiral staircases connect the levels, revealing the sophisticated engineering of the era. The Round Castle, or Small Mərdəkan Castle, dates back to the 14th century. This cylindrical tower, standing 16 meters tall, features three tiers each covered by a spherical dome. An inscription indicates it was built in 1232 by architect Abdulmajid ibn Masud, commissioned by Shirvanshah Fariburz III. The fortress has an underground passage, though currently restricted, adds to the site's mystique. Visitors can explore the courtyards, where numerous wells once stored provisions during sieges. Ancient stone inscriptions, carved stones, pottery, and artifacts offer a tangible connection to the past.
