Sumqayıt History Museum: Chronicle of an Industrial City

Established in 1967, the Sumqayıt History Museum serves as a repository of the city's dynamic and often challenging past. Housed in a dedicated two-story building, the museum's nine exhibition halls unfold a chronological narrative, starting from ancient times and continuing to the present day. The museum's collection comprises approximately 15,000 artifacts, encompassing a wide range of historical, cultural, and artistic objects. Exhibits showcase ancient tools, pottery, and other artifacts unearthed in the Sumqayıt region, providing glimpses into the lives of those who lived here centuries ago. The displays then transition to the medieval period, highlighting the region's role in trade and cultural exchange along the Silk Road. Traditional clothing, textiles, and jewelry offer insights into the area's rich cultural heritage. The museum dedicates significant space to Sumqayıt's transformation during the Soviet era. In the mid-20th century, Sumqayıt was transformed into a major industrial center, with factories producing chemicals, synthetic rubber, and other products. The museum explores the rapid industrialization process, showcasing photographs, documents, and artifacts related to the construction of factories and the lives of the workers who migrated to the city from all over the Soviet Union. These exhibits shed light on the social and economic changes that accompanied industrialization, as well as the challenges faced by the growing city. However, the museum does not shy away from addressing the environmental consequences of Sumqayıt's industrial past. During its peak, the city became known as one of the most polluted places in the Soviet Union, with severe health and environmental problems. The museum includes exhibits that document the environmental damage caused by industrial emissions and waste.
