Askeran Fortress: A Historical Sentinel

Askeran Fortress, historically referred to as Mayraberd, is a significant landmark located near the town of Askeran in Azerbaijan. The fortress dates back to the 18th century, with its current structure primarily built between 1788 and 1789 by the Karabakh Khanate. It was erected to protect the eastern frontier and served as a crucial defensive structure throughout numerous conflicts. The fortress is strategically positioned on both banks of the Qarqar River, creating a formidable defensive barrier. The walls stretch over 1.5 kilometers along the river valley, reaching up to 9 meters in height and 2 meters in thickness, constructed from cobblestone and lime mortar. The fortress is reinforced by a series of towers that provide commanding views of the surrounding terrain. The left-bank section features a double line of stone walls and a citadel, while the right-bank section includes towers and connecting walls. Throughout its history, Askeran Fortress has been a focal point in regional conflicts. In 1795, it was captured by Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar during his attempt to restore Iranian rule in the Caucasus. During the Russo-Persian War of 1804-1813, the area around the fortress served as a Russian encampment, and peace talks were held within its walls in 1810. The fortress also played a significant role in defending against internal and external enemies during the Armenian-Turkish conflicts of the early 20th century. Today, Askeran Fortress stands as a testament to the region's complex past and the architectural prowess of its builders.
