Al Khamis Mosque: A Historical Sanctuary

Al Khamis Mosque, located in the Tashan area of Bahrain, is a historical treasure believed to be one of the oldest mosques in the Arab world. Its foundation potentially dates back to 692 CE, with subsequent construction and restoration reflecting diverse influences of Islamic architecture. Some sources suggest the initial construction occurred during the Umayyad Caliphate. An inscription on the site, however, points to the 11th century. The mosque has been rebuilt twice, in the 14th and 15th centuries, when the minarets were constructed. The twin minarets, standing 25 meters high, are easily noticeable and have become a symbol of the mosque. The mosque remained an active place of worship until the 1960s. Partial restoration efforts have preserved its historical significance, allowing visitors to explore its ancient foundations and admire its architectural details. The mosque complex features an early prayer hall with a flat roof supported by wooden columns, dating back to the 14th century. A later section, added in 1339, includes arches resting on thick masonry piers. The site also features a Mihrab slab, believed to originate from the 12th century, bearing inscriptions of Quranic verses.
