Discover more about Tylos Fortress

Tylos Fortress, nestled in Al Qalah village in Bahrain, is a testament to the island's rich history. As part of the Qal'at al-Bahrain site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the fortress invites visitors to explore the remnants of a once-mighty stronghold. Archaeological discoveries suggest it was likely built during the Sasanian period, possibly under King Ardashir I (226-241 AD), when Bahrain was known as Tylos. Its purpose was to safeguard navigation in the Persian Gulf from Arab Bedouins and pirates, highlighting its strategic importance. The site reveals layers of history, from the Dilmun era to the Greek, Arab, and Portuguese periods, making it a unique archaeological and historical reference point in the Eastern Arabian Gulf region. Visitors can wander through the expansive grounds, taking in the breathtaking views. The fortress was constructed with a square ground plan of 55 by 55 meters, encompassed by a moat, and featured round towers at its corners and along its north, east, and south sides. A gate, fortified by two towers, stood on its west side, providing a formidable entrance. In the 13th century, the site regained importance when the old Tylos Fortress was converted into a commercial warehouse. The harbor traded with China and India, and date presses were installed in the fort. With the rise of the Princes of Hormuz, Bahrain Fort was built southwest of Tylos Fortress, leading to its decline. Today, Tylos Fortress is freely accessible, allowing visitors to explore the archaeological site.
