Discover more about Qala't Bu Mahir

Qala't Bu Mahir, or Bu Maher Fort, stands as a proud sentinel on the southern tip of Muharraq Island, Bahrain. This historical fortress is a key component of the Pearling Path, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that tells the story of Bahrain's pearling era. Originally constructed in 1840, with possible origins tracing back to a 16th-century Portuguese fortification, it served as a crucial defensive structure, safeguarding the pearling harbor and the island's primary water source. In its prime, Qala't Bu Mahir was a robust, four-towered fort with imposing defensive walls, dominating the Bu Mahir Seashore. It protected the pearling fleet from pirates and aggressors, ensuring safe passage for dhows at the beginning and end of each diving season. The fort also protected a vital freshwater source for Muharraq. British naval forces destroyed parts of the fort in 1868, diminishing its defensive role. It then took on new importance for the pearling society, becoming a focal point for festivals marking the pearling season. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this once-mighty fortress, including the southern tower and its attached defensive wing. Archaeological excavations have revealed the foundations of the north-western and south-eastern towers, as well as the northern wall, allowing visitors to imagine the fort's former scale. The fort also boasts a visitor center with exhibits about the history of pearling. The 3.5-kilometer Pearling Path starts here, winding through Muharraq and connecting historic houses, mosques and buildings related to the pearl trade.
