Discover more about Duraz Temple

Located in the village of Duraz, the Duraz Temple, also known as Maabet al-Diraz, offers a captivating journey into Bahrain's ancient past, dating back to the Dilmun civilization of the 3rd millennium BCE. While modest in scale compared to other Dilmun-era sites, it holds significant historical value as a remnant of this ancient civilization. The temple's discovery is attributed to the British Archaeological Mission, which conducted excavations in the 1970s. These excavations unearthed artifacts, including snake vessels, Barbar pottery, and Dilmun seals, which helped date the site and provided valuable clues about its purpose. These findings suggest that the temple was an important religious center during its time. Today, the Duraz Temple site is a shadow of its former self, reduced to an area of approximately 700 square meters due to urbanization. However, the surviving ruins still offer a glimpse into the temple's original structure and layout. The most prominent features are the remains of cylindrical columns, each with a diameter of 120 cm. These columns, arranged in two rows, once supported the temple's central structure. Nine of these columns remain, preserved to a height of 60 cm, offering a tangible connection to the past. Archaeological evidence suggests that the temple complex included a small quadrangular room, likely the cella or worship room, possibly equipped with an altar. A large rectangular room, opening to the west of the columned hall, may also have been part of the temple building. These architectural elements, while fragmented, provide insights into the temple's design and function. Unlike the more elaborate temples of Mesopotamia or the nearby Barbar Temple, Duraz Temple exhibits unique architectural characteristics. This distinctiveness underscores the independent development of religious practices within the Dilmun civilization.
