Discover more about Bahrain Fort

Qal'at al-Bahrain, or Bahrain Fort, is an extraordinary archaeological site that stands as a vivid testament to Bahrain's rich and layered history. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, also known as the Portuguese Fort, isn't just a military structure; it's a historical cornerstone revealing millennia of human occupation. Excavations since 1954 have unearthed an artificial mound, a tell, rising 12 meters and composed of seven stratified layers. These layers chronicle the presence of various civilizations from 2300 BC to the 18th century, including the Dilmun, Kassites, Greeks, Portuguese, and Persians. The fort served as the capital of the Dilmun civilization, a crucial hub for trade and cultural exchange connecting the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, and even China. The present fort largely dates back to the 6th century AD, with significant modifications by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Wander through the well-preserved ruins, and you'll see residential structures, streets, and monuments, all surrounded by a protective wall. The Bahrain Fort Museum enhances the experience with around 5,000 artifacts excavated from the site, representing various ages of the Dilmun civilization. The museum also provides a free audio guide, offering insights into the site's history. At night, the fort is beautifully illuminated, creating a captivating atmosphere for visitors.
