The Pearling Path weaves through the old city, connecting significant buildings and sites related to the island's pearling past.Originally constructed in 1840, though its origins can be traced to a 16th-century Portuguese fortification, Qala't Bu Mahir played a crucial role in safeguarding Muharraq's pearling industry. Its strategic location allowed it to defend the narrow channel southeast of Muharraq, Arad, and the passage to Manama, protecting the pearling fleet from pirates and other aggressors during the diving season.In 1868, British naval forces destroyed parts of the fort, diminishing its defensive role. However, it continued to hold importance for the pearling community, serving as a vantage point for spectators during the departure and arrival festivals of the pearling fleet. The fort also protected Muharraq's principal water supply, a freshwater source located in the sea.Today, visitors can explore the remaining southern tower and defensive wing, as well as the excavated archaeological remains.
