Discover more about House of Architectural Heritage

The House of Architectural Heritage, located in the heart of Muharraq, Bahrain, offers a unique glimpse into the city's architectural evolution. This contemporary space, designed by Noura Al Sayeh and Leopold Banchini Architects, stands as a testament to the preservation of Muharraq's cultural identity. Conceived as a 'beam structure,' the building frames the existing walls of adjacent buildings, essentially showcasing them as part of the exhibit. This design reveals the different phases of construction the city has undergone, from traditional coral stone to more recent block work. The interior walls are coated with a thin layer of lime wash, creating a coherent space while maintaining the expression of the original materials. The House serves as an exhibition space and houses the archives of architect John Yarwood, who meticulously documented Muharraq's architectural heritage in the 1980s. His sketches, drawings, and photographs offer invaluable insights into the city's past. A small architectural library is located on the mezzanine level. Folding glass doors run the length of the building, allowing the exhibition space to open completely to the streets. This design choice encourages public participation and integrates the building into the urban landscape, creating a public passage. The House of Architectural Heritage is part of the Shaikh Ebrahim Center's efforts to revitalize historic buildings in Muharraq and promote cultural exchange.
