Bab Al Bahrain: Gateway to Bahrain's Heritage
Explore Bahrain's heritage at Bab Al Bahrain, the iconic gateway to Manama's vibrant souq and cultural heart.
Bab Al Bahrain, or 'Gateway of Bahrain', is an iconic landmark located in the heart of Manama. Constructed in 1949 by Sir Charles Belgrave, advisor to the Emir, it originally served as the main entrance to the Manama Souq and housed government administrative offices. Over the years, land reclamation has shifted the structure several kilometers inland from the coast. The monument was refurbished in 1986 with Islamic architectural elements and again in 2013 to restore it to its former glory. Today, the ground floor houses a tourist information office and a handicrafts shop. Bab Al Bahrain stands as a symbol of Bahrain's rich history and culture. It provides access to the Manama Souq, a traditional marketplace filled with shops selling textiles, spices, perfumes, and local handicrafts. The area surrounding the gate has been transformed into a pedestrian-friendly plaza, hosting cultural events and exhibitions. Visitors can explore nearby attractions such as the Bahrain National Museum and the Al Fateh Grand Mosque. Bab Al Bahrain offers a unique glimpse into Bahrain's past and present, making it a must-visit destination.
