Al Khamis Mosque, located in the Tashan area of Bahrain, is considered one of the oldest mosques in the Arab world, with its foundation believed to have been laid as early as 692 CE. Some sources date its construction to the era of the Umayyad caliph Umar II, while others suggest it was built later during the rule of the Uyunids. The mosque has been rebuilt and restored several times throughout history, with the minarets added during the 14th and 15th centuries.The mosque's architecture reflects its rich history, with the oldest prayer section featuring a flat roof supported by wooden columns dating back to the 14th century. A later section, added in 1339, includes arches resting on thick masonry piers. The twin minarets, standing at 25 meters high, are topped with small domes and have become a distinctive feature of the mosque. Visitors can explore the mosque's interior, admire the intricate carvings and Quranic inscriptions, and wander through the surrounding gardens.
