Discover more about Duraz Temple

The Duraz Temple, also known as Maabet al-Diraz, is a significant historical landmark in Bahrain, offering a window into the island's ancient past. Dating back to the Dilmun civilization around the 3rd millennium BCE, this temple provides valuable insights into the religious practices and architectural styles of the time. Excavated by a British archaeological mission in the 1970s, the site revealed artifacts like snake vessels, pottery, and Dilmun seals, confirming the temple's age and purpose. The temple's design is unique, featuring cylindrical columns, some of which still stand at 60 cm high, offering a glimpse into its original grandeur. A square base between the columns may have been used for a statue or altar. To the east, a small room likely served as the temple's worship area. While the exact deity worshipped here remains unknown, its proximity to a natural spring suggests a connection to water deities, reflecting water's importance in Bahrain's arid climate. A later subterranean tomb, dating to the Kassite period and used through the Iron Age, adds another layer to the site's historical significance. Today, the preserved site covers approximately 700 square meters, located just north of Budaiya Highway. Visiting Duraz Temple offers a unique opportunity to connect with Bahrain's rich cultural heritage.
