Arad Fort: A Sentinel of Bahrain's Past

Arad Fort, or Qal'at 'Arad, is a historical marvel located on Muharraq Island in Bahrain. Constructed in the late 15th century, the fort exemplifies Islamic military architecture. Its strategic location near the coast made it a key asset for any ruling power in Bahrain. Originally built before the Portuguese invasion in 1622, Arad Fort served as a defensive structure. Over the centuries, it has been controlled by the Portuguese, Omanis, and Persians. The fort's architecture reflects a blend of traditional Islamic and Portuguese styles, indicative of the diverse influences that shaped Bahrain's history. The fort was restored between 1984 and 1987, and traditional materials like coral stone, lime, and tree trunks were used. The fort's square shape features cylindrical corner towers equipped with battlements. The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities has implemented amenities such as a visitor center, restrooms, and a gift shop to enhance the visitor experience. Located near the fort is Arad Fort Beach Park, offering a walking track, barbeque area, and a beach view.
