The Bahrain National Museum, situated in Manama on an artificial peninsula overlooking Muharraq Island, is the largest and one of the oldest public museums in Bahrain. Inaugurated in December 1988, the museum complex covers 27,800 square meters and is considered one of the finest museums in the Gulf region. Designed by Danish architects Krohn & Hartvig Rasmussen, its striking white travertine marble facade reflects a blend of modern aesthetics and cultural significance. The museum's exhibits span 6,000 years of Bahrain's history, from the ancient Dilmun civilization to the pre-industrial era. The complex includes halls devoted to archaeology, the Dilmun civilization, Bahrain's culture and lifestyle, and natural history. Key exhibits include Dilmunite stamp seals, artifacts from Barbar temple, the Durand Stone, and a tableau from the Epic of Gilgamesh. Visitors can explore halls dedicated to graves, Tylos, Islam, customs, traditions, trades, crafts, documents and manuscripts. The museum also features an Islamic art exhibition and a section on Bahraini culture before the discovery of oil. The museum consists of two connected buildings with approximately 20,000 square metres of floor space. The main building houses permanent and temporary exhibition areas, an art gallery, a lecture hall, a gift shop, and a café. The administrative building contains offices, research areas, conservation laboratories, and collection storage. The grand foyer hosts the exhibition “Investing in Culture”. The museum also promotes global culture through art expos. Visitors can explore the museum's extensive collection and exhibits, gaining a comprehensive overview of Bahrain's history, culture, and natural environment. The museum is open six days a week, closing only on Tuesdays.
