    Al Khamis Mosque, believed to be the first mosque in Bahrain, stands as a testament to the island's rich Islamic history. Its foundation is thought to have been laid as early as 692 CE, although an inscription suggests a later date in the 11th century. The mosque has been rebuilt and renovated several times, with significant work done in the 14th and 15th centuries, when its distinctive twin minarets were constructed.Throughout its history, Al Khamis Mosque has served not only as a place of worship but also as a center for religious rituals and education. The mosque's architecture reflects the traditional Islamic style, featuring a prayer hall, mihrab, and minbar. Basic local materials, such as clay and teakwood shipped from India, were used in its construction. The twin minarets, rising 25 meters high and topped with small domes, are among the earliest examples of Islamic minarets in the region.Today, visitors can explore the partially restored mosque and its surrounding gardens. The Al Khamis Visitor's Centre offers a permanent exhibition of archaeological artifacts discovered on the site, providing insights into the mosque's history and significance. The mosque is open to visitors six days a week, typically from 12 PM to 5 PM. Modest dress is recommended to respect local customs.
