Discover more about King Fahd Causeway

The King Fahd Causeway, also known as Jisr al-Malik Fahd, is an impressive feat of engineering that serves as a vital link between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the island nation of Bahrain. Spanning 25 kilometers across the Gulf of Bahrain, this causeway consists of a series of bridges and causeways that have significantly boosted the economies of both nations since its opening in 1986. The idea for the causeway arose in 1954 when King Saud of Saudi Arabia expressed a desire to strengthen ties with Bahrain. However, it wasn't until 1981 that an agreement was signed to begin construction. The project was officially inaugurated on November 26, 1986, by King Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. The causeway comprises five bridges and seven embankments, including a large border station on the largest artificial island. This island is divided, with the western side belonging to Saudi Arabia and the eastern side to Bahrain. The border station includes mosques, restaurants, government offices, and coast guard towers. The causeway features two roadways, each 11.6 meters wide, with two lanes and a curb for emergency parking. Today, the King Fahd Causeway is more than just a means of transportation; it has become a popular tourist attraction. The Middle Island is a popular stop for travelers, offering a mosque, gardens, and fast-food restaurants. The causeway provides a unique travel experience with picturesque views of the Arabian Gulf, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
