Discover more about Bab Al Bahrain

Bab Al Bahrain, or 'Gateway of Bahrain', is an iconic landmark located in the heart of Manama. Constructed in 1949 by Sir Charles Belgrave, advisor to the Emir, it originally served as the main entrance to the Manama Souq and housed government administrative offices. The building once stood on the Manama coastline, but extensive land reclamation in the later half of the 20th century has shifted the coastline several kilometers north. In 1986, the monument was refurbished to incorporate Islamic architectural features. A complete renovation in 2013 restored the building to its former glory. Today, Bab Al Bahrain houses a tourist information office and a handicrafts shop on the ground floor. The landmark provides a unique identity of a traditional Bahraini market and has been fully restored to how it was when it was first built. As the entrance to the Manama Souq, Bab Al Bahrain provides visitors with a sensory delight, with narrow alleyways filled with the aromas of spices, textiles, and traditional handicrafts. The area has been transformed into a pedestrian-friendly plaza, enhancing its appeal as a cultural and tourist destination.
