Discover more about Bahrain Fort Museum

The Bahrain Fort Museum, also known as Qal'at al-Bahrain Site Museum, stands as a testament to Bahrain's enduring legacy as a crossroads of civilizations. Located on the northern coast of Bahrain, approximately 4 kilometers from Manama, the museum offers an immersive journey through the island’s captivating past, spanning over four millennia. Opened in February 2008, the museum seeks to maintain the ancient historic features of the site, as well as document the archaeological periods by preserving the artifacts discovered at the site. The museum is part of the Qal'at al-Bahrain site, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Excavations at the site have revealed that humans have occupied the area for nearly 4,500 years. The museum's collection showcases five different historical periods arranged chronologically within separate galleries. The exhibits trace the fort's fascinating history, from the Dilmun civilization of the third millennium BCE to the Portuguese period. Highlights include cuneiform inscriptions, Dilmun seals, Greek coins, and stone statues. The building's introverted design reflects traditional Bahraini architecture, emphasizing simplicity and harmony with the surrounding environment. The museum also contains a main courtyard leading to a café which overlooks the coastline opposite the fort, as well as a lecture hall and gift shop. After exploring the museum, visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the fort's pathway to enjoy the panoramic views of the site. The adjacent Bahrain Fort is free to enter and is particularly stunning when illuminated at night.
