Saar Temple, officially known as the Saar Archaeological Site, is located in the town of Saar, west of Manama. This well-preserved site offers a unique window into the Dilmun civilization, which thrived in the region over 4,000 years ago. The Saar settlement was discovered in 1977, and excavations have revealed a sophisticated Dilmun town, complete with residential buildings, streets, alleyways, and a central temple complex. The site covers approximately 2.5 hectares. The heart of the Saar settlement is the temple complex, constructed around 1900 BC. The temple's design features a trapezoid-shaped room with a small storage area and three central columns that once supported the roof. Archaeologists believe that the temple was used to mark the summer solstice, highlighting the advanced astronomical knowledge of the Dilmun civilization. Surrounding the temple are the remains of residential buildings, offering a glimpse into the domestic lives of the Saar inhabitants. Artifacts discovered within the households include pottery, tools, copper fishhooks, bitumen nodules, and shells from shellfish, including pearl oysters. The Dilmun civilization thrived on maritime trade, agriculture, and pearl diving, accumulating wealth and influence throughout the region. The civilization began to decline around 1600 BCE. Today, Saar Temple is a remarkable archaeological site and a portal to the past.
