Krishnanagar Rajbari: A Glimpse into Royal Bengal's Past

Krishnanagar Rajbari, a majestic palace with a history spanning over 200 years, is a significant landmark in Krishnanagar. Constructed during the reign of Zamindar Krishna Chandra Roy, the palace is a prime tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its historical significance and architectural beauty. The palace is named after Krishna Chandra Rai (1728–1782). Before its regal association, the city was known as 'Reui'. The Rajbari is known for its blend of traditional Bengali architecture and European styles. Although time has eroded some of its former splendor, the palace retains its captivating charm with carvings on its inner walls. The vibrant colors and colonial appeal of the entrance are particularly noteworthy. The palace complex houses a Durga Temple in its central courtyard, established by Maharaja Rudra Roy, the great-grandfather of Krishna Chandra Roy, to bring peace and prosperity to Nadia. The reflection of the temple on the surrounding 'Dighi' (water body) creates a picturesque scene, especially during Durga Puja. The palace has been a silent witness to historical events, including battles, grand Durga Pujas, and the preservation of silver artifacts. Krishnanagar itself has a rich literary and cultural heritage and was the birthplace of the poet Dwijendra Lal Roy. Nearby attractions include Ghurni, famous for its clay dolls, and Bethuadahari Forest. Nabadwip, the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and Mayapur, known for its ISKCON temples, are also within easy reach.
