Public Transport

From major transport hubs like Kamalapur Railway Station or Gabtoli Bus Terminal, take a local bus towards Shahbagh or TSC মোড় (TSC More), both located on the periphery of Sohrawardi Udyan. Bus fares typically range from 10-20 BDT. From either stop, it's a short walk to the Swadhinata Stambha within the park. Look for the towering glass structure as you approach.

The Swadhinata Stambha, also known as the Independence Monument, stands as a powerful symbol of Bangladesh's journey to freedom. Located in Dhaka's Sohrawardi Udyan, a site of immense historical significance, the monument commemorates the events of the 1971 Liberation War. It was in this park, formerly known as Ramna Race Course, that the commander of the Pakistani Army surrendered, marking the end of the war and the birth of a new nation. The monument's centerpiece is a 50-meter high tower constructed of stacked glass panels. This Tower of Light represents the nation's emergence from darkness into light, from subjugation to freedom. At night, the tower is illuminated, transforming into a radiant white pillar. The Swadhinata Stambha complex also includes an underground Museum of Independence, a multi-media projection theater, and an amphitheater. The museum displays photographs and artifacts related to the war, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made for independence. The monument's design, created by architects Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury and Marina Tabassum, was selected through a national competition in 1997. Construction began in 1999, with the monument officially completed in 2013.
