The Dalan has been rebuilt and renovated several times, most notably in 1823 by Naib Nazim Nusrat Jung, and after the earthquake of 1897.Though Prince Shah Shuja, who funded the original construction, was Sunni, he was known to patronize Shia institutions. Today, Hussaini Dalan serves as the main Hussainiya of Dhaka, a venue for majlis gatherings, especially during Muharram, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. The mourning and religious gatherings culminate on Ashura, with large processions through the streets.
