Murapara Jamidar Bari, also known as Murapara Rajbari or Matherghat Zamindar Bari, stands as a testament to the bygone era of the zamindars in Bengal. Located in the Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj District, Bangladesh, this historical landmark is approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Dhaka. The palace, a century-old structure, offers visitors a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle and architectural grandeur of the zamindari system.The estate was established in 1889 by Babu Ramratan Banerjee, who rose to prominence as a treasurer of the Natore estate. Legend says that Banerjee constructed the palace using wealth gifted to him by a British indigo planter. The palace has been renovated and expanded over the years by Banerjee's descendants, blending Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture with traditional Bengali styles. The two-story palace is rectangular in plan, boasting a grand frontage that stretches approximately 200 feet. A 10-foot wide verandah runs along the front of the palace on both levels, providing access to the numerous rooms within. Semicircular arches, adorned with cast iron tracery and colored glass, decorate the verandah, casting colorful mosaic patterns on the floor as sunlight filters through.The Murapara Jamidar Bari features 95 elaborate rooms, including sleeping quarters, court halls, dance halls, stables, shrines, storehouses, and kitchens. The estate also includes temples, a guesthouse, a meeting room, and two ponds located in the front and back of the building. The temple spire rises approximately 30 feet high, adding to the palace's majestic appearance.After the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, the Banerjee family moved to Calcutta, and the palace remained abandoned for some time. In 1948, the Government of Pakistan repurposed the building as a juvenile correctional center and hospital. Later, around 1966, it was used as a school and college. In 1986, the Bangladesh Directorate of Archeology recognized the Murapara Zamindar's house as an archaeological site. Today, the main building of the Jamidar Bari serves as the home of Government Murapara College. While the college's presence adds to the site's vibrancy, it can also make exploring the palace difficult during school hours. Visitors are encouraged to visit on weekends or holidays to avoid the crowds of students and fully appreciate the historical ambiance. The palace is surrounded by lush greenery, including an Amrakanan (mango grove) near the temple.
