Tanguar Haor: A Floating Paradise

Tanguar Haor, located in the Dharmapasha and Tahirpur upazilas of Sunamganj District, Bangladesh, is one of South Asia's largest natural water reservoirs. This remarkable wetland, a designated Ramsar site, spans approximately 100 square kilometers and is a vital source of livelihood for over 40,000 people. Locally known as “Noykuri Kandar Chhoykuri Beel”, Tanguar Haor is a mosaic of 120 interconnected beels (smaller wetlands) and countless canals, creating a unique and dynamic ecosystem. The haor's history dates back to the 7th century, with the Mughal army strategically using it. Over time, it became a popular destination for anglers and fishers, drawn by the abundance of fish. Today, Tanguar Haor is celebrated for its exceptional biodiversity, including over 140 species of freshwater fish, 206 species of birds, and a variety of aquatic plants. Every winter, it becomes a temporary home for around 200 types of migratory birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The landscape transforms dramatically with the seasons. During the monsoon, the haor swells into a vast expanse of water, resembling a sea, with the Meghalaya hills providing a stunning backdrop. In winter, the water recedes, revealing green fields and creating a haven for migratory birds. Visitors can explore the haor by houseboat, gliding through calm waters, passing floating vegetation, and remote villages. Key attractions include the Tanguar Haor watch tower offering panoramic views, the crystal-clear Jadukata River, and the vibrant Shimul Bagan, known for its red blooms. However, Tanguar Haor faces significant environmental challenges, including overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution. Efforts are underway to promote community-led conservation and sustainable management of its resources. Despite these challenges, Tanguar Haor remains a captivating destination, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, ecological significance, and cultural richness.
