Discover more about Neermahal

Neermahal, Tripura's 'Lake Palace,' is a captivating architectural marvel rising from the heart of Rudrasagar Lake. Located 53 km from Agartala, the capital of Tripura, this former royal palace was envisioned by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarma as his summer retreat. Construction began in 1930 and was completed in 1938, showcasing a blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles. Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya commissioned the British company Martin and Burns to design and build this unique water palace. The palace is divided into two main sections: the Andar Mahal (inner palace) and the Bahir Mahal (outer palace). The Andar Mahal, on the western side, was reserved for the royal family, featuring luxurious rooms and private spaces. The eastern side, known as the Bahir Mahal, served as an open-air theater where cultural events like dance, drama, and theater were organized. The palace has 24 rooms in total. Neermahal stands as a testament to the Maharaja's vision of blending Hindu and Muslim traditions and cultures. The palace is constructed with red sandstone and white marble, featuring ornate walls, pavilions, balconies and pillars. The reflection of the palace on the placid waters of Rudrasagar Lake creates a mesmerizing sight. The lake itself is home to a variety of resident and migratory birds, making it a haven for birdwatchers. To reach Neermahal, visitors must take a boat from the shore of Rudrasagar Lake. The boat ride offers a unique perspective of the palace, allowing visitors to appreciate its grandeur and architectural details. The Tripura government organizes a three-day Neermahal Water Festival in August, featuring boat races and cultural performances.
